PakEX – Introducing Dungeons and Dragons by Wizards of the Coast
Let’s kick off with an introduction from Wizards of the Coast: “The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more.”
That first sentence covers the biggest part of D&D – storytelling – When you play D&D the GM is guiding you and your party through a narrative adventure. Sure – you’ll fight monsters, solve puzzles, gain XP, and level up, but the key thing is you’ll live through a story; and unlike the last season of Game Of Thrones, it has someone at the helm trying to ensure it all makes sense. It may be a one-off short story, or an epic adventure that takes a few months of play sessions to get through.
D&D uses a set of dice that goes well beyond the normal 6-sided die we use in most board games, ever seen a 20-sided die? Looks a bit like a small golf ball. Some players like to have a miniature of their character, or they just might use a paper marker; similarly, one GM might have a paper grid that they mark where things are for managing combat, another might have a highly detailed and decorated 3D dungeon set they use.
If the above sounds a little bit like Skyrim/Witcher/insert video game here – that’s because D&D is the original RPG that spawned them all, it’s currently in its 5th edition and is a very well refined ruleset that’s easy to pick-up and play without having to look up tables of information regularly. There will be a number of tables running intro’s to Dungeons and Dragons at PakEX. Make sure you come to our free community event on Saturday the 14th of March at the Outlook Community Center, 24 Toomuc Valley Rd Pakenham and try it out for yourself – there’s a good reason there’s millions of D&D players worldwide!
